Join us this Friday, February 22nd at 7pm at the Seattle Labor Temple for a community forum where we’ll present stories about the opportunity to fund human needs by cutting the bloated Pentagon budget. Click here for a printable event flyer, or here to RSVP.
Doors will open at 6:30pm, and light refreshments and free parking are available. The Seattle Labor Temple is located at 2800 1st Ave in the Belltown neighborhood of Seattle, site of our 4th Anniversary Dinner back in November.
This will be a free, public event where members of our community will share short, powerful stories about the impacts of the economic crash in their own communities. We’ll also be focusing on how federal programs have helped alleviate these problems, and where programs could be increased or entirely new ones created. Our goal is to advocate for increased funding to support veteran job and housing programs. Other organizations will be advocating for programs that help their communities including education, healthcare, green jobs, and other human needs.
The event will be a powerful, action producing forum. As you may know, Sen. Murray is the chair of the Senate Budget Committee and has made public statements supporting cuts to the Pentagon while protecting spending on human needs. She is now in a powerful leadership position, and our local efforts have a real opportunity to shape the outcome of the ongoing federal budget negotiations.
Back in December, we sent a message to our supporters in Washington State asking for your backing when two veterans from GI Voice went to meet with Sen. Murray and Sen. Cantwell. Thank you to the 120 of you who took action! We delivered your letters along with our message to Sen. Murray and Sen. Cantwell’s key staff to increase funding for veterans housing and job programs along with other human needs spending by making targeted cuts to the bloated Pentagon budget.
We’re organizing this event with American Friends Service Committee, Church Council of Greater Seattle, Green Party, Fellowship of Reconciliation, and many others. I hope to see you on Friday night!
