Veterans and service members are struggling to meet their basic needs. With across the board budget cuts set to take effect Friday, today is our opportunity to make our voices heard. Please call your elected representatives before 3pm and demand that we invest in people, not the Pentagon. By making targeted cuts to the bloated Pentagon budget we can free up money for veterans housing, job programs, healthcare and other human needs.
Call Senator Patty Murray at (202) 224-2621 and Senator Maria Cantwell at (202) 224-3441 between 6am and 3pm Pacific Time using the following suggested talking points:
- My name is _____________ and I’m calling from (city or town)
- I’m a (veteran, student, etc) and I think we’re spending too much on the Pentagon and not enough on (veteran job programs, veteran housing, etc).
- I want the senator to support cutting the Pentagon budget by $1 trillion over the next 10 years.
- Thank You.
Please also call your member of Congress by calling the US Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-1321. When you’re finished, please shoot us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org and let us know how your calls went!
At Coffee Strong, we often work with veterans struggling to find housing and jobs. Nationwide, at least 76,000 veterans remain homeless. The unemployment rate for Iraq and Afghanistan era veterans has remained above 10% for years. We have the money to fix these problems, but instead spend it on a Pentagon budget that dwarfs the military budgets of the next 29 biggest spending countries combined. The core Pentagon budget (excluding the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan) grew by 50 percent during the last 12 years.
Since November, we’ve been working with local and national peace and justice organizations to advocate for increased funding for human needs, especially veteran housing and job programs, by making targeted cuts to the bloated Pentagon budget. In December, two Iraq war veterans from GI Voice joined a diverse delegation that met with Sen. Murray and Cantwell’s key staff in Seattle. Last Friday over eighty community members and two Congressional aides attended a forum that we helped organize where members of our community spoke about the devastating effects of the economic crash and subsequent state and federal budget cuts.
Please take action today before 3pm Pacific and make sure to email us email@example.com and let us know how your calls went!
